Kannapolis Christmas Train Ride and Light Show

The whole family can enjoy a fun and entertaining Christmas Celebration of Lights, train ride, Santa, and more at Village Park in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Families who are looking for fun, free and inexpensive Christmas activities may find that North Carolina’s Kannapolis offers a nice mix of Christmas lights and fun outdoor activities, refreshments, a train ride, and more. Village Park in Kannapolis, the location of this Christmas exhibit, is on 700 West C Street.

Kannapolis Christmas Train Offers Great View of Christmas Lights

Unseasonably cold temperatures have not stopped the Christmas train in Kannapolis as the locomotive named the Winterland Express makes its way around the track to the delight of its passengers on board. For $2 per person, riders can enjoy seeing a Christmas light show of more than 150,000 lights boasting a variety of fun holiday-themed scenes, such as:

  • Snowflakes
  • Toy soldiers
  • Snowmen
  • Reindeer
  • Winter lake scene
  • Lighted tunnel.

While waiting to board the train, guests can admire the nice variety of Christmas-themed artwork from local groups of various ages. One example is shown in the photo at the top and bottom of this article. The train will sound its whistle, and little guests may excitedly jump up and down at the thought of seeing the open car train come into the covered station.

Jack, one of the volunteer train engineers, may laugh as he remarks that perhaps he looks a little like Rudolph because he gets the brunt of the cold air at the front of the train. He might even encourage the crowd to call out the infamous “All Aboard” or perhaps a more Christmas-oriented last call before the train clickety-clacks down the track.

The train also runs during the summer months when school is out.

See Santa, Kannapolis Singing Bears, and More Christmas Fun in Kannapolis

Kids who would like to get a chance to sit on Santa’s lap can find the jolly man himself in Village Park between 6 and 9 p.m. Santa has his own little shop that is well-lighted for those parents who wish to bring their camera for some great picture-taking opportunities. Best of all, there is no fee for seeing Santa. He might even have a small treat for the kids too!

The Kannapolis singing bears can be found just a few feet from Santa’s room. The singing bears are automated characters designed to delight visitors with a nice selection of Christmas carols, a little bit of history about some of the carols, and perhaps a few jokes. The kids may be amazed as the bears come to life for 30 minutes starting every hour on the hour.

Visitors might like to stop by the snack shop for some s’mores. A fire awaits those who would like to try their hand at roasting some marshmallows. Items like train whistles, lollipops, and hot chocolate are available for purchase.

For those who would like to come in out of the cold, a great interactive model train and button village is offered. The adults might have as much or more fun than the kids in this Winter Fest activity offered in the Community Room.

Kannapolis Offers Fun Christmas Activities for Families

This year’s Kannapolis Celebration of Lights show and Winterland Express at Village Park are offered December 4-31 (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). The interactive model train display is available on December 10-19. Remember to bring warm winter clothing for outdoor activities!

This is the first year my family visited this display. We have kids ages 9, 6, and 3, and everyone, including the adults, thoroughly enjoyed it. Parking is close and free and everyone working that night was especially friendly and welcoming. We hope to go to this one again in the future!
