Kings Drive Art Walk at Festival in the Park

Kings Drive Art Walk

After the weather we had this past week, I’m sure you’re all dying to get outside and enjoy some beautiful spring weather. My fingers are crossed for some sunshine this weekend so you can all check out the Kings Drive Art Walk this Saturday and Sunday.

Ever since I moved to Charlotte, the Festival in the Park has been one of my favorite annual traditions. I love browsing through the booths, snacking on some kettle corn or a funnel cake, and being outside in Freedom Park. In 2010, Festival in the Park added another annual event to look forward to each year – The Kings Drive Art Walk, taking place at the end of April.

Since the fall of 1964, Festival in the Park has brought Charlotteans from all walks of life together to enjoy arts, crafts, music and family entertainment. With the mission of bringing the community together by celebrating the arts, the Festival Board is excited to broaden its reach and to announce a spring fine arts event, the Kings Drive Art Walk.

We invite you to participate in our spring event which will be held along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, a reclaimed natural waterway between East Morehead Street and Pearle Park Way Bridge along Kings Drive. With a focus on fine and emerging artists, our spring festival on this beautiful and easily accessible venue is an annual fine arts outing!

The KDAW festival is located on the King’s Drive section of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, a beautiful public space that is open to all in the community.

This event is sort of a mini Festival in the Park and it takes place along Little Sugar Creek Greenway along Kings Drive near Morehead. It’s a family-family event where you can browse the booths of more than 90 regional artists, enjoy delicious food, encounter performances by aerial dancers, jugglers, and roving minstrels all while and taking in a Carolina spring day.

We took my daughter last year when she was about 3 years old and we all had a great time. My daughter loved hearing the music and taking in the sites, while I loved looking at all of the unique art for sale and talking with the artists at the event. I ended up purchasing some pottery and it was so nice to meet the artist and learn more about her.

This year’s event takes place Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free and readily available in the lots and neighborhood streets nearby.

If you wanted to make a day of it, you could stop by the Kings Drive Farmers Market in the morning before hitting up the Art Walk, or you could start at the Art Walk in the late afternoon and walk to Metropolitan to enjoy an afternoon cocktail or early dinner. No matter when you go, you’re bound to have a great time strolling along the greenway, looking at beautiful, original works of art, and taking in Charlotte’s spring weather.
