Corolla, NC Vacation Guide

Best Things to do in Corolla NC

Less than 30 years have passed since Corolla began transforming itself from a small North Carolina village into the vibrant community you’ll find today. Despite Corolla’s incredible growth and nouveau couture, the area has maintained the natural and historical identity that has attracted visitors throughout the centuries. Beyond the fabulous shopping, exquisite dining and variety of activities offered, you’ll discover a local reverence for the natural splendor that makes the Outer Banks so unique.

Corolla beaches

Corolla beaches, far removed from the bustle and flair of the modern age, are much beloved for their timeless serenity. Greet the morning sunrise (or sleep in for a change!) and spend the day relaxing on the cool, spacious sands, or plan an invigorating afternoon of fun in nearby Currituck Heritage Park. The park is home to some of Corolla’s most popular tourist destinations including the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, and the Whalehead Club, an incredible 21,000-square-foot-home that has been restored and preserved for public tours. For some excitement on the Atlantic, rent a jet ski or windsurf board for an afternoon of cutting through the famous Outer Banks waves. Quieter Corolla water activities include sound-side kayaking and sailing along the shore.

Carova Beach

Carova Beach is a popular beachfront 4×4 driving destination. It is an unincorporated community known for its undeveloped coastline of 12 miles. You can also watch wild horses graze by the sandy shore, look for seashells on the white sand, or play catch with a ball or frisbee. Go on a water adventure with your kids and teach them how to fish, bodyboard, or surf.

Currituck Beach

Currituck Beach is breathtakingly beautiful, with its powdery white sand, breathtaking views of the North Atlantic Ocean, and unrivaled landscape. Make new memories with your tribe, partner, or friends by bonding as you participate in various activities along this beautiful coastline. Relax by the beach as you work on your tan, build towering sandcastles with your kids, or enjoy a lovely beachfront picnic.

Corolla Village

For an all-day shopping bonanza, be sure to check out the historic area of Corolla Village where you’ll find an incredible variety of locally owned shops and restaurants. A more inclusive shopping, dining and entertainment destination may be found at TimBuck II Shopping Village where over 60 vendors and restaurants overlook the Currituck Sound. No visit to Corolla would be complete without feasting on the freshest seafood. Dig into succulent crab cakes or platters of steamed shrimp at one of Corolla’s locally owned restaurants. Other coastal delights, like juicy Black Angus prime rib, perfectly grilled burgers and homemade pasta dishes, are all on the menu!

Corolla Wild Horse Tours

Of course, no trip to the Outer Banks would be complete without hanging out (at a safe distance) with the famous wild horses. North of Corolla, these herds of untamed horses are believed to be descendants of Spanish mustangs brought overseas hundreds of years ago. As these horses are contained in a sanctuary located in the northernmost beach area of Currituck, the best way to see these magnificent animals is to take a guided vehicle tour led by a knowledgeable guide. Be sure to stop by the Wild Horse Museum and Mustang Store to learn more about these incredible animals and pick up a souvenir of your experience.

Historic Corolla Village

The Historic Corolla Village is a time capsule with buildings dating back to the 1800s. It preserves its historical heritage and offers a variety of attractions for visitors to enjoy. Museums, an old courthouse, boutique shops, and local agencies offering guided tours are among the attractions in this area.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, built in 1875, is a historical brick lighthouse that stands 162 feet tall. This iconic lighthouse is just one of many fascinating and breathtaking sights to see this weekend as you tour Corolla. It has a red exterior, which is one of its most distinguishing features, and serves as a vital guide to passing mariners. Climb the 220 steps of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse for a sightseeing adventure. Once you’ve reached the top, feel free to take as many photos of the breathtaking view as you want.

Duck Town Park and Boardwalk

Duck Town Park and Boardwalk, which spans 11 acres, is a well-loved attraction that offers an endless array of fun options. It has a one-mile-long wooden boardwalk. Spend time with your significant other on a romantic date at Duck Town Park and Boardwalk. You can take a stroll down the boardwalk with your partner, watch a live music show, or enjoy a lovely picnic. Share a special moment while kayaking or canoeing on the glistening water, or while watching the magnificent sunset from a gazebo.
