In honor of Breastfeeding Week, I decided to tell you all the tips that helped me to Pump Exclusively since I was unable to nurse the traditional way. Please see Part 1 for my journey and more tips!
Tips that helped to make my Exclusive Pumping Journey Successful (continued):
When my child’s milk intake increased, I increased my milk supply — I did this by mimicking cluster feeding. I would add another pump in for a couple of days or pump for 15 minutes, take a 5 minute break and pump again for 5 minutes and repeat as necessary; making sure that I didn’t pump too much to cause any nipple pain. Usually after 3 days I would notice an increase in my milk supply and be able to back off of pumping to my normal routine.
Storage system — My refrigerator and freezer looked like a dairy section in a grocery store but we found a system that worked for us and stuck to it!!
Cleaning system — My husband and I took turns washing dishes so that I wouldn’t get burnt out! I am still grateful for that and the pump cleansing wipes made by Medela. {Please make sure that you clean your pump accessories, I also stored mine in the refrigerator!}
Hands-free — With my first daughter I didn’t need this but the second time around I did! The hands-free clips that came with the pump I used with my youngest daughter did not work for me very well–so I used a bra with the holes for the “horns” or breast shields which seemed to hold the pump more securely. You can also try to make your own by taking a sports bra and cutting the holes where the pump horns will be. Yes, I walked around the house, did chores and entertained my children while pumping. It may be a funny sight, but it worked for us. (I could also use a nursing cover if I felt the need.)
Nipple care — Instead of lanolin, I found that extra virgin olive oil worked for me when.
Know when to stop — If it is getting too difficult, physically, mentally or emotionally, then supplement or stop. This is why I stopped at 11 months, I was not getting as much milk due to stress and I just felt in my heart that it was time to wean my daughter.
Through experience and perseverance and a desire to feed my children breast milk, I discovered that pumping exclusive worked the best choice for me and my family and hope that my tips have given you some great information to help you make the best decision for your family.
Please feel free to comment or email me if you have any questions about my experiences with exclusive pumping.
Do any of you exclusively pump? We would love to hear your tips!!
