Unique program brings the classroom to life inside the thrill capital of the Southeast

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 16, 2012) Carowinds, the thrill capital of the Southeast, announced today it is continuing its partnership with Discovery Place, one of the leading hands-on science centers in the country, to enhance educational programming during its 2012 Education Days scheduled on select dates through May 25.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Discovery Place to enhance our Education Days program,” said Bart Kinzel, Carowinds’ vice president and general manager. “We know many students and teachers saw the value of the partnership last season and when they asked us to provide students with the same opportunities during our Education Days this season, we were happy to oblige.”

During each of Carowinds’ seven Education Day dates, Discovery Place will provide on-site interactive learning stations set up throughout the park to help elementary, middle, and high school students gain a greater understanding of the basics of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a fun and interactive setting. All on-site curriculum will align with the standards set forth by the NSTA (National Science Teachers Association).

“It’s fascinating to learn that roller coasters don’t have engines but operate safely by converting potential energy to kinetic energy,” said Robert Corbin, vice president, Learning Experiences at Discovery Place. “Carowinds is a playground for thrill seekers, a showcase for physical phenomena, and an extraordinary opportunity to demonstrate the ways that science, technology, engineering, and math work in our everyday lives.”
